THE AUDIO PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES PROGRAM
242 Hours: 10 months (daytime) / 12 months (evening)
The Audio Production Techniques Program consists of three technical courses and the Career Development course, for a total of 54 meetings, including separately scheduled labs and individual studio instruction classes. Training consists of theory of basic audio concepts including microphones, signal processors, consoles, etc., and proceeds to intensive hands-on instruction with a specific focus on techniques of audio for radio, TV, industrial, educational and multimedia production. Analog and digital editing, backtiming, voice-over techniques, multi-track production, and more are covered step by step in this program.
The student will learn traditional linear editing methods, plus the latest techniques using one of the most popular non-linear editor/recorders in use today: the DigiDesign ProTools system. Because The Omega Studios’ School is a DigiDesign Authorized Training Location, students who successfully complete this program and meet the required standards may be candidates for ProTools Operator Certification. An introduction to the ProControl user interface is also included as a part of the program.
Even though a student enrolled in this program may, under certain conditions, qualify for ProTools Operator Certification, such certification is not a requirement for graduation from this program. A student may pass the Audio Production Techniques Program by achieving the minimum grading standards outlined elsewhere in this publication. In order to earn ProTools Operator Certification, the student must submit to specific requirements, including a separate testing procedure hosted by DigiDesign.
This program is approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission for Veterans’ Benefits.
Vocational Objective
Through intensive hands-on activities, students will be exposed to the specialized practices involved in the production of commercial jingles, music beds and narrative program, SFX and mix to film/video; including participation in analog and digital editing, voice-over, multi-track production recording and final production for radio and TV (audio) production. Using both linear and non-linear methods, the student will be able to work in almost any facility, from the smallest to the largest, using everything from razor-blade editing through to the ProTools AudioSuite functions.During the non-linear editing/recording segments of Course #3, DigiDesign Certified instructors train students in Omega’s specially designed ProTools Learning Lab using individual Macintosh G-4 workstations. Qualifying students may receive DigiDesign ProTools Operator Certification.
The graduate from this program is qualified
for a wide range of employment opportunities, including entry-level audio
production assistant (or ProTools Certified Operator) for radio, TV, multimedia,
film, industrial, educational, theater, production, including post-production
for any type of media involving the editing and manipulation of audio.
Additionally, the editing skills learned in this program (both linear and
non-linear) will substantially enhance the employment status of studio recording
engineers and live sound engineers.
Course #1: Basic Practical Recording Engineering
Course #1 offers 58 hours of instruction consisting of 27 hours of classroom instruction, 24 hours of small-group studio instruction, 6 hours of lab activities and 1 hour of individual studio instruction. Classes are taught one evening per week for 14.5 weeks or two days per week for 7.25 weeks. Lab sections are held outside of class times. Course #2: Intermediate Recording Engineering and Studio Techniques
Course #2 offers 58 hours of instruction consisting of 28 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of small-group studio instruction with an emphasis on extensive hands-on experience. Individual studio instruction consists of a two-hour mix and two intensive, two-hour individual lab sections held outside of scheduled class time. Classes are taught one evening per week for 14.5 weeks, or two days per week for 7.25 weeks.

Course #3: Audio Production Techniques |

Course #3 provides 74 hours of small-group studio instruction, 6 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of individual studio instruction, for a total of 90 hours. The intensive studio instruction classes emphasize hands-on operation of the ProTools editing/recording system, taught by Omega’s DigiDesign Certified Instructors. Classes are taught one evening per week for 17 weeks or one day per week for 17 weeks. Some lab/individual instruction classes are held outside of class time and may result in additional hours per week.

Course #4: Personal and Career Skills
Course #4 offers 36 hours of training consisting of classroom instruction, discussions and class exercises. Classes are taught once per week for both day and evening sessions for 5 weeks.
