Vocational Objective
The objective of the Sound Reinforcement for Live Performance Program is to train the student for entry-level employment as a live sound engineer/front-of-house or monitor engineer for live concerts and performances, theater, public address for speeches and vocal presentations, conventions, educational, industrial, TV productions and any other situation where it is necessary to provide PA coverage over a large group or audience. Typical entry-level duties include, but are not limited to, stage setup/interconnection, operation of stage monitor systems, and the wiring/setup/packing and transport of portable systems.

The student will be grounded in basic theories of the latest audio technology, receive intensive in-studio hands-on training, then will proceed into the theories of system design, assembly and operation. As a part of the program, the student will set up and operate sound for an actual live concert.
 

Course #1: Basic Practical Recording Engineering
Course #1 offers 58 hours of instruction consisting of 27 hours of classroom instruction, 24 hours of small-group studio instruction, 6 hours of lab activities and 1 hour of individual studio instruction. Classes are taught one evening per week for 14.5 weeks or two days per week for 7.25 weeks. Lab sections are held outside of class times.

Course #2: Intermediate Recording Engineering and Studio Techniques
Course #2 offers 58 hours of instruction consisting of 28 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of small-group studio instruction with an emphasis on extensive hands-on experience. Individual studio instruction consists of a two-hour mix and two intensive, two-hour individual lab sections held outside of scheduled class time. Classes are taught one evening per week for 14.5 weeks, or two days per week for 7.25 weeks.

Course #3: Sound Reinforcement For Live Performance
Course #3 provides 54 hours of specialized instruction consisting of 34 hours of classroom instruction and 20 hours of small-group studio instruction. The student receives intensive hands-on training under actual performance conditions. Instruction begins with basic audio concepts including microphones, signal processors, consoles, etc., proceeds to a specific focus on various PA/DJ techniques, along with introductions to festival sound, TV sound and lighting. Classes are taught one evening per week for 13.5 weeks or one day per week for 13.5 weeks.

Sound Indoors and Outdoors: live sound vs. studio sound
System Theory: signal flow; various live sound applications
Signal Processors/Specialty Microphones
Speakers and Amplifiers: enclosures, types, calculations
DJ Mixers/Specific Applications/Troubleshooting
PA and DJ System Lab
Mid-term Exam
Intro. to Festival Sound / Hotel Sound
Setting It Up and Making It Work

Course  #4: Persoanl and Career Skills
Course #4 offers 36 hours of training consisting of classroom instruction, discussions and class exercises. Classes are taught once per week for both day and evening sessions for 5 weeks.
